🕊️ Obasanjo's Pivotal Role in DRC Peace Process
Obasanjo is not only a respected elder statesman but also a co-chair of the Panel of Facilitators for the peace process in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He shares this key role with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This panel emerged from the merger of the Nairobi and Luanda peace frameworks, aiming to bring coherence to fragmented efforts and steer effective negotiations between the Congolese government and armed groups like the AFC-M23.
The expanded facilitation team also includes:
-
Kgalema Motlanthe (South Africa)
-
Catherine Samba-Panza (Central African Republic)
-
Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia)
These former African heads of state are working to push forward:
-
Direct dialogue between warring factions
-
Implementation of disarmament and demobilization strategies
-
Neutralisation of the FDLR militia, which has links to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda
🌍 Continental and Global Synergy
In addition to the African-led efforts, countries like Qatar and the United States have also thrown their weight behind parallel peace initiatives to restore calm in the volatile Great Lakes region.
President Kagame’s meeting with Obasanjo signals Rwanda’s proactive engagement in shaping the security dynamics of Central and East Africa, while also reinforcing the importance of African-led solutions to African challenges.
