Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to Be Laid to Rest in Katsina
A Nation in Mourning: Buhari's Final Journey
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest in the compound of his home in Katsina on Tuesday, as confirmed by the state's Governor Dikko Radda. Buhari passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London clinic, leaving behind a legacy as one of Nigeria's most significant political figures.
Governor Radda was with Buhari's family in London during his final moments and has since announced the arrangements for the former president's burial. His remains will be flown directly from London to Katsina before being transported to his hometown of Daura, located approximately 50 miles (80 km) away.
Public Holiday Declared in Honor of Buhari
In recognition of Buhari's contributions to the nation, the Nigerian government has declared Tuesday a public holiday. This gesture reflects the respect and admiration held for Buhari, who was not only a former army general but also one of only two Nigerians to have served as both a military leader and a democratically elected president.
Ceremonial Farewell: Military Honors and Islamic Prayers
Nigeria's Information Minister Mohammed Idris announced that a military ceremony and Islamic prayers will be conducted in Daura to honor the late leader. A brief military ceremony will take place at the airport in Katsina, where current President Bola Tinubu will personally receive Buhari's remains.
The funeral, initially scheduled for Monday, was postponed due to logistical reasons. Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who will accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria, stated that the former president died after a brief illness, although further details were not disclosed.
Tributes Pour In: Remembering Buhari's Legacy
Buhari's passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum. He was first elected president in 2015, making history as the first opposition leader to defeat an incumbent. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom Buhari defeated, praised him as a selfless leader committed to his duty and characterized by deep patriotism.
Former military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida, who overthrew Buhari in a 1985 coup, also paid tribute, describing him as a moral compass and an example of modesty in public life.
A National Mourning Period
President Tinubu, who will attend the funeral prayers in Daura, has declared a seven-day national mourning period in honor of his predecessor. In an official condolence statement released on Sunday evening, Tinubu emphasized that the nation would pay its final respects to Buhari with dignity and honor, starting with the lowering of all national flags to half-mast across the country.
As Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to a leader who shaped its political landscape, the nation reflects on Buhari's enduring legacy and the impact he had on the lives of millions.
